As a little boy I was attracted by coloring-in pictures and soon after I was sketching the figures myself. I loved the colors and the drawings even at a young age. On one special birthday I got a big sketchpad and from that point I was devoted to sketching. I loved everything - color pencils, watercolors, pen and ink. Naturally, I also loved to paint. One day I discovered model clay & began sculpting all kinds of shapes, figures & animals. I had discovered an extra dimension, which I could use to make my figures alive. These interests led me to pursue further studies including etching & sculpture. At the time I graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts my main interest was sculpture.

The human body has always fascinated me: the shapes of the muscles; the way the body moves and changes; and its natural balance. I was challenged to capture this in my sculpture. I have always been an ‘Iron man’ and began by making man – sized metal sculptures from scrap metal. I loved to transform this hard material into what I wanted it to look like: to bend it; to shape it; to melt it and to let it flow into the form that I wanted it to be. With time, things change, and so did my work. I started to experiment with different materials, including wood, sisal rope, roof tiles and natural stone.

After exploring the human body for years, I started to use abstraction with my sculptures, simplifying my figures to give them more power and highlighting the aspects I most wanted to express. My desire was to show the true balance of our human form so I wanted to place the human figure without the need for a traditional socle.

In 2006 I made the decision to move my family to NZ leaving everything I had known before. The total change of environment and the new culture impacted me on many levels - How could it not? These impressions & experiences showed me a different approach to life and brought new dimensions to my artistry. I started to paint - acrylic on canvas.

My inspiration came from the constant presence and natural beauty of New Zealand: shapes and colours of Nature – the beautiful blue of the sky and the sea, and the endless variety of differing shades of green. I started to interpret nature in my own way, transferring the colour & form of my surroundings into paintings. This positive channelling of my feelings connects me to the world and my place within it.

I am driven to explore my environment using different media to express myself and convey my perspective and experience. Whether designing furniture, painting, drawing, using ink or mixed media, I am constantly challenged to look beyond what I am doing now, to see what is next. It is this need to look beyond my present that allows my work to evolve, changing to reflect new perspectives.
